Bird Massage 101

Although I have studied both cat and dog massage,  bird massage is outside of my usual repertoire.  Still I feel Amelia would benefit from some massage and range of motion exercises for her weak left side.  We have added this physical therapy after meals (with the continued Reiki, color therapy and Hypericum).  It has been a learning experience for us both.

We begin again

Much to my surprise, Amelia was still with us this morning.  She ate from her syringe with great gusto and even pecked at a few seeds.  Despite very cold weather, she needed some outside time and perked up considerably after that.  I've given her Ledum pal (great homeopathic for puncture wounds) and have been putting Aqua Gel made from Willard Water on the wound.  She still isn't moving much and we seem to have lost ground on our left leg strength.  Our bond is stronger though.  Amelia almost snuggles in my hand after feeding now.  We use that time for some extra Reiki.  Although I feel that her prognosis is still not good, we both continue to work hard to make her release a reality.

Major Setback

I came home this evening and discovered Amelia had injured herself in her cage (small puncture wound near her left leg).  It must have happened early in the day as she did not eat much and lost significant amounts of blood (for a bird).  I syringe fed some baby bird food by Kaytee after washing her wound and putting some liquid bandage on it.  We finished with a long Reiki session. Although she ate well, she is extremely quiet.  I fear she won't make it through the night.  During all our "procedures" this evening I saw something different in her eyes.  I think she finally knows that I am not just someone keeping her captive,  I am here to help,

Wings on the mend

Amelia made her first complete flight across the cage this morning although she is still not using her left wing completely.  Very exciting for all of us.  Extremely windy for the next few days (60 mph gusts) so release is definitely on hold.

Treatments Continue

Although the changes are not as dramatic now, Amelia shows little glimmers of improvement each day.  We have now switched her homeopathic to Hypericum perf. (great for nerve injury) and are now using yellow (for stimulating the motor nervous system and energizing the muscles) when we do her nightly color therapy.  She seems to enjoy sitting under the light before bedtime.

Rainy Days and Mondays

Very wet weather through out the weekend meant Amelia spent her outside time on the front steps. much to the pleasure of my kitties.  Amelia didn't seem to mind the watchful eyes during her breakfast.  Our bird feeders are all near windows so perhaps she and her flock are accustomed to the audience.  Monday morning is not  to be rainy, so we are back in the garden next to the feeders and closer to our feathered friends.

Visitors

Amelia began her day with a visitor. A downy woodpecker landed on her flight cage and proceeded to make its way to all sides. Perhaps he was looking for a way to spring his friend from her captivity? Unfortunately, she is not quite ready. However, we are seeing more left wing movement and more time up off the cage floor. Right now she is enjoying a colortherapy treatment. She has been sitting underneath the lemon light for hours.

Road Trip

Big day for Amelia.  Great improvement in her leg use.  Only one episode on her back.  She is making short baby bird flights but still limited left wing usage.  I took her to Country Care Animal Complex in Green Bay for a bicom treatment (bioresonance therapy).  I've seen it do amazing things with my domestic animals.  Amelia road quietly in a small kitty carrier covered in a blanket and sat patiently for her treatment (minus 2 short  exploratory trips around the exam room).  She was "happy" to get back to her flight cage where she ate a good supper before climbing on to a top branch for some well deserved rest.  Sweet Dreams of a speedy recovery.

Looking forward to Freedom

Amelia is enjoying the more spacious accommodations.  She now is upright almost 100% of the time and can right herself relatively quickly when she does end up on her back. This evening she ate a small amount on her own and I found her on one of the top branches in her cage, grasping it with BOTH feet!!  We are all looking forward to the end of her captivity.  May it be soon.

Breakfast Club

We made it through the night!!!  Amelia (as I have named her) isn't yet eating on her own so a little assistance is in order.

Helping an Injured Bird

A small bird hit my porch window this morning. After a few drops of Rescue Remedy and some Reiki she began to recover. After an hour she still was unable to keep herself in the upright position, much less fly so she was put in a small aquarium for safe keeping. I gave her several droppers full of water in which I had dissolved Arnica Montana (great homeopathic for trauma). I just came home to find her able to stay on her feet for a few minutes at a time. She's still not using her left side much.  More Arnica, Rescue Remedy and a move to a small flight cage for flying practice are in order.
